Safe Artificial Nail Materials!

Safe Artificial Nail Materials!

There are many ingredients and additives that have been classified by the EU Commission as dangerous or harmful to human health and are therefore PROHIBITED from being used in cosmetics, including nail products. These banned ingredients are often carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic (toxic to foetus, fertility) harmful chemicals, so they are no joke! In addition, this list is constantly growing over the years as technology advances and tests are able to analyse the effects of an ingredient on a wider and deeper scale, either alone or in combination with other ingredients. This means that manufacturers of artificial nail materials - following the legal requirements and the EU Cosmetics Regulation - must constantly monitor the list of newly excluded, banned ingredients and always take this into account when developing products, so that no product is accidentally placed on the market that, according to the latest scientific knowledge, could be harmful or dangerous to health.

This is particularly important in light of the fact that an international study published in February 2024 has already clearly demonstrated that nail materials can be absorbed through the nail plate even when used as intended!

To meet these requirements, there are a number of requirements imposed on manufacturers or distributors of nail products. The EU Law legislation refers to manufacturers and importers of artificial nail products (who import products from outside the EU, for example from China, and place them on the EU market, for example in Hungary) as Responsible Persons, a legal term which implies that the Responsible Person is fully responsible for the compliance of these products with EU regulations, ultimately to ensure that the products are safe for consumers (guests) and users (nail technicians).

The only problem is that there are many nail materials on the market in Hungary for which no one takes this responsibility and no Responsible Person has been appointed, and at the same time none of the EU requirements to guarantee the safety of the products have been met, and the presence of banned, dangerous ingredients in these products has not been checked!

These requirements are:

- Name and designation of the person responsible

- Name and designation of the person responsible. Nail materials that are not registered on the CPNP (Cosmetic Product Notification Portal) cannot be placed on the EU market!

- Safety assessment and safety report for all products

- TID (Product Information Document) for all products

- GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) compliance

- Availability of data on animal testing

- Regulatory compliant labelling on all products

What does this mean in practice? Essentially, it means that there are a number of artificial nail materials (also) currently on the Hungarian market - typically of Chinese, Far Eastern origin - whose ingredients do not provide any assurance, evidence or verification that they comply with the EU's banned carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductive harming ingredients.

Remember that your guests trust your nail technician, as she is the professional, so it is also her responsibility to use safe products on your guests. We believe that a professional takes this responsibility, this knowledge and expertise should be as much a part of their profession as how to prepare a natural nail without it resulting in a fungal infection.

Unfortunately, at present, nail technicians cannot check for themselves whether a product is a safe nail material, i.e. whether it is registered in the CPNP system, as this database is not public. We do not understand the reason for this, as it would be in everyone's interest.

However, we - as Mystic Nails, as a manufacturer, and therefore as a Responsible Person - have access to the CPNP database - as it is mandatory to register our products in the CPNP - so we have access to the other products that have been registered, i.e. we can check the fact of registration and we are happy to help anyone.

In this presentation, Laci Gyimesi, the CEO of Mystic Nails, will tell you everything you need to know about how it works, and you will also get some background information that will make you think about nail materials in a completely different way in the future. So it's worth a look!

So, if you have a product (any brand, any product) that you want to make sure is a safe nail material and is registered in the CPNP system, all you have to do is fill out the short form below, and we will send you a reply to the email address you provided within 2 working days.
